Work and projects
In the order they appear on the page. Formula Slug is listed here from the resume but is not on the home page yet: it is waiting for a photo of the car.
Undergraduate researcher, HARE Lab, University of California, Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz, July 2026 to present)
- Developing a PPO locomotion policy for the Unitree B1 quadruped in MuJoCo MJX (JAX), with a first goal of stable, velocity-commanded walking on flat ground before adding pushes and rough terrain.
- Shaping the reward (velocity tracking, orientation, base height, foot slip and clearance, torque and action-rate penalties) and iterating on training runs to turn an early, unstable gait into a reliable walk that tracks commanded velocity.
- Stack: JAX, MuJoCo MJX, PPO, Python.
- Live demo: https://devmello.xyz/demo/quadruped/ runs a trained policy (192k parameters, PPO on MuJoCo MJX) on the Unitree Go2 model in the browser: MuJoCo compiled to WebAssembly at 500 Hz, the network at 50 Hz, keyboard velocity commands and pushes.
- The policy in the demo is the one Pranav trained, and the same policy file is being put on the real robot. On the home page the demo runs in its frame, walks by itself, and can be driven with the keyboard or the on-screen pad.
Formula Slug vehicle control unit firmware (UCSC Formula SAE Electric, September 2026 to present)
Formula Slug is UC Santa Cruz's student-run Formula SAE Electric team. Website: https://formulaslug.com/
- Reworking the vehicle control unit's VectorNav IMU/GNSS link in Mbed OS C++, consolidating all outputs into one 100 Hz binary packet that cuts serial load from 81% to 74% of the 115,200-baud link and matches the CAN transmit rate.
- Built a laptop simulator that runs the unmodified VCU firmware against a stand-in for Mbed OS and a virtual CAN bus, backing 31 automated C++ and Python tests of ready-to-drive, pedal faults and torque requests without the car.
- Added a self-healing link state machine that reconfigures the sensor after 500 ms without packets, plus a 10 Hz CAN status frame reporting packet rate, errors and reconfigurations for live IMU health monitoring on the car.
- Stack: Mbed OS, C++, Python, CAN.
Firmware engineer intern, Nova Robotics (Santa Clara, February 2025 to March 2026)
Rokx is the robot Nova was building: ZED stereo cameras for eyes, a two-axis head and neck, an arm and drive wheels, all on ODrive motors. Company website: https://www.novarobotics.us/
- Fine-tuned a quantized LLaVA vision-language model with LoRA adapters and a frozen vision encoder under limited compute, raising on-device throughput on an NVIDIA Jetson Nano from 1 to 2 FPS to 15+ FPS for real-time interaction.
- Contributed an OpenAI-compatible streaming API server to Microsoft's open-source VibeVoice text-to-speech model (pull request 59), streaming audio from the first generated token instead of after the last, for near-instant first audio.
- Steered VibeVoice's vocal tone through prompt and punctuation sequencing in a maintained fork, and Dockerized the model stack.
- Developed Python motor-control software on a Raspberry Pi commanding five ODrive motor controllers (drive wheels, arm, head, neck) over dual 1 Mbps SocketCAN buses using the ODrive CAN protocol for position, velocity and torque control.
- Built VR teleoperation in Unity/OpenXR (C#) for Meta Quest, streaming 60 Hz head-tracking quaternions to drive two-axis head and neck motion while returning stereo ZED camera video to the headset.
- Cut teleoperation latency from 1.2 s to under 100 ms by moving video transport to WebSockets, stitching both stereo frames into a single compressed stream, and switching to hardware-accelerated video encoding on the Jetson.
- Engineered zero-configuration networking across the Jetson, the Pi and the headset with UDP broadcast discovery and auto-reconnecting WebSocket clients, and fixed a keep-alive bug that halted IMU streaming after 30 s.
- Stack: Python, C++, C#, LoRA, CUDA, ODrive CAN, Unity/OpenXR, WebSockets, Docker.
- Photos of Rokx: front, side, three-quarter view.
Co-founder and lead engineer, CometKits (Santa Clara, September 2022 to June 2025)
CometKits makes low-cost robotics kits for elementary schools. Website: https://kits.devmello.xyz/
- Developed ESP-IDF firmware in C/C++ for custom ESP32 PCBs designed in EasyEDA, integrating an MPU-9250 IMU over I2C on a sensor bus kept extensible for future modules, powering kits for 500+ students.
- Built a browser-based Blockly IDE that transpiles block code to C++, compiles it on a remote server with a prebuilt, cached toolchain so only student code recompiles, and flashes robots over Web Serial or Bluetooth serial.
- Designed a PlatformIO CI/CD pipeline and an HTTPS over-the-air firmware update system, automating mass provisioning and remote updates for 250+ ESP32 units in classrooms and reducing total deployment time by 60%.
- The program has been recognized by the city's mayor and covered by NBC Bay Area.
- NBC Bay Area segment, "South Bay high school robotics team bringing sport to next generation": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5Mq5VVSzcs
- Stack: C/C++, ESP-IDF, EasyEDA, Blockly, PlatformIO, OTA.
Dual-reaction-wheel humanoid balance control (2024 to 2025)
- Built real-time balance control for a dual-reaction-wheel biped in C++ on a Teensy 4.1 and Python on a Raspberry Pi, driving six ODrive BLDC motors over 1 Mbps CAN with PID control at a 250 Hz CAN feedback rate and a 5 ms loop target.
- Derived torque-decoupling equations that let two diagonally mounted, non-orthogonal reaction wheels act as independent roll and pitch actuators, with commanded torque normalized to the motors' velocity saturation limit.
- Implemented law-of-cosines leg inverse kinematics and a six-state cyclic gait with sinusoidal trajectories for walking.
- Eliminated IMU-to-motor feedback vibration by raising I2C from 100 to 400 kHz (IMU reads from 4 ms to 1.1 ms), adding a 4 Hz low-pass filter, and enabling anticogging with absolute encoders on all six motors, allowing higher derivative gain.
- Video, 10 seconds, portrait: https://devmello.xyz/videos/nova-humanoid.mp4. The biped balances on one leg and switches legs while its two reaction wheels hold it upright.
- Stack: C++, Teensy 4.1, Python, Raspberry Pi, ODrive CAN.
FTC Team 8872, Robopocalypse (2022 to 2025)
- Co-captain and software lead of Wilcox High School's FIRST Tech Challenge team in Santa Clara. Led a five-person software crew: Road Runner motion planning, OpenCV vision and the autonomous routines.
- The team reached the 2024 FIRST Championship in Houston.
- Tools that came out of it: Voyager, a modular pathfinding library for FTC robots with a documentation site (https://voyager.devmello.xyz/, code at https://github.com/devmello/Voyager), and AxonProgrammer, a cross-platform programmer for Axon servos so teams on macOS and Linux can configure servos that only had a Windows tool (https://github.com/devmello/AxonProgrammer).
